The Great Lakes Icebreaker (GLIB), which utilizes the Double Acting Ship (DAS™) concept, was developed jointly by Aker Arctic and the United States Coast Guard. Ice model tests were also carried out in Finland.

USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30) was built by Marinette Marine Corporation (Wisconsin, USA) and commissioned in 2006.
