New icebreaker concept selected for Baltic Sea

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has taken a bold step and adopted a first-of-a-kind propulsion configuration emphasizing functionality and cost-effectiveness for the next generation Baltic Sea assistance icebreaker: twin shaft lines and rudders in the stern, and a single azimuthing propulsion unit in the bow.

We began developing the new icebreaker concept in close co-operation with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency last April. The concept phase — including evaluation three different propulsion configurations with extensive model tests — is now complete and the project is ready for the next phase: shipyard tendering. Construction of the new 96-metre icebreaker, partly funded by the European Union under the WINMOS IV project, is scheduled to start next year and the vessel is expected to be delivered by September 2029.
